Max Nyman violaViolist Max Nyman graduated from the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki in the Spring of 2020. His most important teachers have included violists Atte Kilpeläinen, William Coleman and Steven Dann, as well as violinist Jari Valo and chamber pianist Timo Koskinen.

Max has performed in the ranks of most Finnish orchestras, including the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Finnish National Opera Orchestra, and the Avanti! Chamber Orchestra. During the 2021-2022 season, he has played as a substitute with the Helsinki Philharmonic and spent a month at the Arctic Circle with the Lapland Chamber Orchestra, guesting as their principal violist.

Max is a founding member of the international Versoi Ensemble, which brings together young graduates of the Sibelius Academy and the Juilliard School. With the ensemble, he has performed at the Kaufman Music Center, Dakota Building, UNHQ, Helsinki Music Center, and Kyrö Distillery, and has collaborated with artists such as Osmo Vänskä and Anssi Karttunen.

In the Fall of 2021 Max had an opportunity to delve into the world of contemporary music and improvisation together with Magnus Lindberg and the Zebra Trio at their Creative Dialogue workshop in France. Likewise intrigued by ancient music and historical performance practice, Max has studied at the Salzburg Mozarteum with Reinhard Goebel, as well as in Finland with Minna Kangas and Kreeta-Maria Kentala. Max regularly performs on period instruments with Finnish ensembles and baroque orchestras.

Max’s viola was built in 2011 by Hermann Janzen in Mission, British Columbia.
