Music by the Sea welcomes 10 of Canada’s finest established and emerging artists to Victoria for a live concert to be streamed online Sunday, August 30.

The artists, many of whom were scheduled to participate in the Music by the Sea festival in Bamfield, BC, this summer, will form a jazz quintet and a classical string quintet for a full program of music featuring both genres of music. The concert will be live streamed on https://www.facebook.com/MusicByTheSea/live/

Classical piano quintet:
Mary Sokol, violin  (Vancouver)
Steven Dann, viola  (Toronto)
Hannah Craig, cello  (Victoria)
David Brown, double bass (Vancouver)
Rosemary O’Connor, piano (Vancouver)

Jazz Quintet:
John Stetch, piano  (Vancouver)
Buff Allen, drums  (Vancouver)
Jared Burrows, guitar  (Vancouver)
Russ Botten, bass  (Vancouver)
Mike Allen saxophones  (Vancouver)

Pay What You Want and all monies raised will be shared equally among the artists.

“This streaming event promises to be something unique”, says Music by the Sea Artistic Director Christopher Donison. “We have two stages in the Victoria International Marina and four cameras, and we will segue between musical genres with potentially three sets from each quintet.” 2020 was to be the 15th season of Music by the Sea and the company planned to extend the season to bring a series of concerts to Victoria following the festival in Bamfield. “The Victoria run was to be in the new Victoria International Marina on the Inner Harbour” explains Donison, “and we are grateful for their continued support during this time of great change. The Marina, PK Sound and Darcy Beck Productions have made it possible for us to gather musicians from across the country to perform together and to live stream this single concert. Online viewing is free with an option to Pay What You Want and all monies raised will be shared equally among the artists”.

Since 2006, the annual Music by the Sea Festival has gathered professional musicians from around the globe in Bamfield, a speck on the map of Vancouver Island, to make music surrounded by boundless nature. In addition, the MBTS Fellowship Artist Mentorship program invites some of the most promising young emerging artists from around the world to participate in a transformational residency of intensive chamber music studies. The music residency of emerging and professional artists culminates in a series of summer concerts that attract a growing number of adventurous music lovers to the beautiful Rix Centre for Ocean Discoveries on the edge of the Pacific. Music by the Sea looks forward to a return to Bamfield for Music by the Sea 2021.

Dear Music by the Sea Patrons,

We are announcing today that the 2020 MBTS season has been cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
We are all very disappointed. We delayed as long as possible before having to make this decision.
Although normally there is a “no refund policy” for our tickets, these are extraordinary circumstances. For those who have already purchased tickets we will provide a refund if you choose. We would like you to consider, however, the option of receiving a tax receipt for your payment or the option of using your ticket for an alternative MBTS season. The MBTS box office will be contacting you all in the very near future.

Thank you for your ongoing support and for the support of the community of Bamfield. That support over these 15 years has enabled Music by the Sea to become the experience that so many audiences and professional artists from across Canada and around the world have come to celebrate. We are currently exploring other ways in which Music by the Sea may have a presence this year, so please stayed tuned!

Again,
Many, MANY thanks
Yours Sincerely,

Christopher Donison, Artistic Director
And for the Music by the Sea Board of Directors.

Concerts at Victoria International Marina

Mark these dates!  July 29 to August 1, 2020.

Victoria International Marina will host Music by the Sea in four concerts. This will be the inaugural season for this celebrated musical company to be heard in Victoria.  For 15 years it has only been available to those who would venture to the isolated village of Bamfield on the westcoast of Vancouver Island where it attracts international jazz and classical artists from around the world.  This year, following the Bamfield Festival, the full company will come to the city for a week-long run from July 29 to August 1, leading up to the Victoria Symphony Splash event on August 2. This series of concerts at the Marina will indeed still be “music by the sea”, since the new Victoria International Marina boasts the newest spectacular harbour front location in Victoria’s Inner Harbour. The sunset in the harbour by the sea will be the backdrop to the musicians’ elite performances of classical, jazz, and vocal music.  Tickets from $75 to $95 will be available February 1.  Phone 250-888-7772 for additional information.

We are experiencing technical difficulties with our online box office.

Please call 250-888-7772 to purchase tickets.
